Tributes are pouring in across Australia after the death of James Valentine, a well-known musician and broadcaster, who has died at the age of 64.
Valentine was best known as a saxophone player with the band Models before moving into radio, where he spent decades as a familiar voice on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). According to ABC, he died at home using voluntary assisted dying after living with cancer for two years.
Musicians and friends have been quick to share their memories of him.
Jimmy Barnes posted a heartfelt message on social media. He said he had known Valentine for a long time and often watched him perform. Barnes remembered him as a talented saxophonist with Models and a thoughtful, funny interviewer on radio. He also said he would miss hearing Valentine’s voice on ABC each afternoon.
Icehouse frontman Iva Davies also shared a detailed tribute. He said the band first met Valentine in the early 1980s while touring with Models. Davies described him as a skilled musician with a joyful approach to his craft. He also worked with Valentine in the studio, including on Icehouse’s Code Blue album.
Davies added that they stayed in touch over the years as Valentine moved into broadcasting. He said Valentine always brought energy, stories, and warmth to every meeting. He ended his message by sending condolences to Valentine’s family.
INXS also paid tribute, remembering him from the Australian Made tour in the mid-1980s. The band called him a positive, caring, and talented person who was always smiling. They noted his time with Models and later work with Absent Friends, where he played alongside other well-known Australian musicians.
Beyond music, Valentine built a strong career in radio and television. He became a long-running host on ABC Radio Sydney’s afternoon program, where his relaxed style and curiosity made him popular with listeners across the country.
He also worked as a writer and interviewer, becoming a trusted voice in Australian media for more than 30 years. In recognition of his work, he was recently appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
Valentine is survived by his wife and two children. His passing has left a clear mark on both the music world and Australian broadcasting, with many remembering how easily he moved between the stage and the microphone.
