In Prince Harry’s view, being royal isn’t something you can just switch off.
Back in January 2020, he and Meghan Markle stepped away from their roles as senior members of the royal family. They left the UK and moved to California, where they’ve been living ever since. Since then, they haven’t returned to official duties, mostly because of ongoing tension with King Charles III, Prince William, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and others.
Still, Prince Harry isn’t happy with how people describe him.
When an ITV reporter recently asked if he agrees with being called a “not a working royal,” he didn’t hold back. He replied simply:
“No, I will always be part of the royal family.”

That’s how he sees it, even if others—especially William, the future king—might feel differently.
Right now, Harry is in Ukraine working with the HALO Trust, a group that clears landmines and helps keep communities safe. He says this kind of work is exactly what he’s meant to do.
“I enjoy doing it,” he explained. “I enjoy being able to do these trips and come and support the people that I’ve met before, the friends that I’ve made, and hopefully bringing attention to issues that, for one reason or another, drop out of the news.”
For him, it’s not about titles or labels. It’s about showing up, helping people, and using his voice to highlight important causes.
So, while the debate around his royal status continues, Harry seems clear on one thing: he still sees himself as part of the royal family, no matter what anyone says.
And that leaves the big question—can you ever really stop being royal once you’re born into it?
